I travelled around Lima quite a bit, not just the usual tourist traps but the suburbs both middle class and poor. There are lots of football pitches but most are in a terrible condition.
As much as they are football mad, the infrastructure or the finances for it just isn't there. Even less so than in comparable neighbouring countries. Seems they are forever destined to finish fifth behind the likes of Colombia or Chile.

Yet again you are choosing to miss the point.... for starters Peru is a far poorer country than Australia and doesn't have the luxuries of a national multi-sport set up to make it's people happy. The World Cup doesn't really need world representation anymore than the rugby world cup does....it's just a sport being greedy and Australia is a country well set up for sport so it can jump ahead of countries with a real history in football by taking an inferior qualifying route and join in the greed because as you've said it's hardly the most popular sport over there.....and finally....everyone would much prefer Scotland or Italy to be there over Australia for supporter participation alone.....that's just a fact as those countries know how to follow their team......

The World Cup needs representation from all parts of the world and all continents.
Peru has a population that is bigger than Australia ... if that is their number 1 sport perhaps they should be a bit better.
Scotland & Italy love their football too. I don't see any tears for them

Svennie maybe it's because you're not quite Australian that you are bothered by me saying Australia is a borefest of a country to qualify for a World Cup again.....they are one of the few countries the World Cup doesn't need as you are like Wigan where Rugby League is what they really like and football is secondary (in Australia this goes even further down the list).....it's a waste of a place especially when a country like Peru loves its football so much more.....
....so no tears from me just a yawn at your attempt to make out you are proud when your adopted nation keeps it low on it's list of sporting popularity.....

Perhaps Peru should have finished better than 5th in a 10 country qualifying group if they wanted to do the same

Thats an attitude of SOME people .... mainly some hardcore supporters of other codes. Bit like how some English people think all football fans are neanderthal cunts.
There are 26m people in Australia and it supports interest in a lot of sports ... AFL , Cricket, NRL,Football, Basketball etc
Probably in that order
Australia qualifying for the World Cup would lead all the sports bulletins.
Probably with that clip of that sports reporter (the aboriginal former AFL player) from the ABC in Federation Square in Melbourne celebrating with fans.

I think a lot of the antipathy to football comes from an attitude that its all playacting, diving, feigning injury & general effeminacy.
Not sure where people travel from to attend the World Cup but probably not from Earls Court.
Probably find more gay Peruvians there these days

Football is well behind AFL & NRL in popularity in Australia and there are some who follow those who are anti-football & would be unaware , disinterested or feign ignorance due to a general inferiority complex.
Personally I like AFL & football & regard rugby of ANY STRIPE as palpably inferior.
Understand there were around 15,000 Aust fans at their first game of 2018 v France

Spoke to my mate in Australia while the game was on, he said most people he knew didn't even know there was a match. Contrast that with here in Peru; most of the people wearing the colours, schools given the day off, shops and offices covered in bunting. They were one of the best supported nations in Russia and were set to do it again in Qatar.
Peru have played a lot better than they did yesterday, which is frustrating.

I see the keeper who was subbed on for Matt Ryan to face the pens was offered a contract by Arsenal as a 16yo. Shortly after they saw a 15yo Wojciech Szczesny so withdrew the offer.
